👻 Mourne Shadows: Eerie Stories from the Mournes 👻THE OLD LADY OF BOGIE HILLBogie Hill overlooks the harbour area in Newcastle, where the spirit of an old woman is said to haunt the grassy slope descending from King Street. Clad in black and wearing a shawl over her head to shield herself from the biting east wind—a weather pattern often linked to fishing tragedies in the area—she gazes anxiously towards the water. Locals believe she is waiting for a missing loved one, possibly a husband or son, who is feared lost at sea.In January 1814, 26 men tragically lost their lives at sea. A further catastrophe struck in January 1843 when a sudden and fierce storm overwhelmed a fishing fleet about seven or eight miles off the Mourne coast, claiming the lives of 72 men and boys. Devastatingly, 46 of the victims were from the Newcastle harbour area, while the others came from Glassdrumman and Annalong further down the coast. Many bodies were never recovered, and those that did wash ashore were initially laid out in the Old Watch House at the harbour.
